BABSON PARK, Mass. - The University of Rochester women's tennis team snapped a 3-3 tie by winning the final three singles matches to claim a 6-3 win over the host Babson College Beavers in non-conference action on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Yellowjackets improved to 6-3 on the year, while Babson slipped to 13-7. Rochester built a 2-1 lead in doubles competition, as first-year Lia Weiner (Sarasota, Fla.) and senior Alexa Perry (Syracuse, N.Y.) won, 8-4, at number one and senior Colleen Cross (Fox Point, Wisc.) and first-year Elana Polivy (Waban, Mass.) prevailed, 8-4, at number two. Babson's lone point in doubles play came at number three, where senior co-captain Jamie Burke (Burlington, Mass.) and sophomore Liz Sheerin (Melrose, Mass.) won by a score of 8-4. After Weiner claimed a 6-2, 6-2 win at number one singles to give the Yellowjackets a 3-1 lead, Babson rallied with singles victories by sophomore Lorene Becerra (Key Biscayne, Fla.) at four and Sheerin at five to tie the contest at 3-3. However, Rochester put the match away with three straight wins, as Polivy won, 7-6 (2), 6-2 at number two, first-year Maria Janda (Rochester, N.Y.) prevailed 6-4, 6-4 at six, and Cross pulled out a grueling third-set superbreaker, 6-7 (6), 7-5 (6), (10-1) at three.
