Feb. 23, 2008 WELLESLEY, Mass. - Senior captain Meg Lynch finished second in her final two individual events at the 2008 NEWMAC Swimming and Diving Championships at Wellesley College on Saturday evening, including her second 'B' cut qualifier in as many days. Lynch finished second overall behind MIT's Amy Jacobi with a time of 59.17 in the 100 butterfly, and just minutes later took second again in the 100 breaststroke, this time finishing behind Springfield's Moira Price. Her final time of 1:07.28 was just shy of her own program record in the event, and it surpassed the provisional qualifying mark for nationals. With 'B' cuts in both the 200 IM and 100 breast, Lynch will now await the announcement of the NCAA Championship field over the coming weeks. Even without a second National Championship bid, Lynch has already cemented herself as the greastest female swimmer in Babson history. She will graduate with an unprecedented eight NEWMAC Championships to her credit, as well as three second-place finishes. She also holds 15 Babson records, including 10 individual marks and five in relay competition. One of those relay records came early Saturday night, as Lynch joined senior Erica Salisbury, first-year Mia Filippini, and senior Skye Hendrix on the Beavers' 200 medley relay team. The Babson quartet finished fifth overall in the event with a time of 1:55.06, breaking the former school mark of 1:55.79 set in 2004-05 by Lynch, Salisbury, Rachael Bishop '07 and Meg Batley '07. First-year Christina Stone, senior co-captain Erika Gammon, senior Lynn Root, and sophomore Stephanie Burns also swam in the 200 medley relay on Saturday, finishing 18th with a time of 2:05.97.
Along with her part in the medley relay squad's record-setting effort, Filippini turned in another fantastic individual effort in both the 100 fly and 100 backstroke. The rookie sensation joined Lynch in the 100 fly finals, finishing seventh overall with a time of 1:00.63. She then performed even better in the finals of the 100 back, placing fifth overall with a mark of 1:02.49. Filippini now has three top-7 finishes in this year's championship meet. Also competing for the Beavers on Saturday was the 800 free relay team of Hendrix, first-year Katelynn Conlon, Root, and Burns, which finished ninth overall with a time of 8:57.26, as well as a host of other individual performers. Gammon finished 18th in the 400 IM with a time of 5:12.02 and 21st in the 100 breast in 1:17.50, Salisbury placed 28th in the 200 free with a time of 2:09.15 and 25th in the 100 back in 1:08.75, Root took 36th in the 100 fly in 1:08.69, Conlon came in 40th in the 200 free in 2:19.88, Burns finished 25th in the 100 breast in 1:18.37, Stone placed 23rd in the 100 back with a time of 1:07.88, and junior Claudia Gutierrez (Rego Park, N.Y.) came in 32nd in the 100 back in 1:17.15. |
