TUCSON, Ariz. - The Babson softball team split its two games in Tucson on Thursday, as the Beavers topped Augsburg, 7-2, and then fell to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse, 7-6, in eight innings.

Babson's first contest featured a brilliant pitching performance from senior Jess Byrn, who allowed no earned runs on five hits while striking out 13 in a complete game win. She also added two hits and a run scored in two at-bats at the plate. Juniors Courtney Thurston, Kaitlyn Clark, and Kim D'Agostino each joined Byrn with two hits in game one, with Thurston scoring twice and driving in two.

Trailing 5-1 after five innings against UW-La Crosse, the Beavers scored two runs in the top of the sixth as Byrn singled in a run and sophomore Michelle Bolduc later scored on a wild pitch. La Crosse then scored again to go up 6-3, but Babson rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh to tie the contest at 6-6. Senior captain Jess Cohen drove in the first run with a single to center, and the fifth and sixth Beavers runs came home on a La Crosse throwing error.

After first-year pitcher Caroline Barr pitched around a pair of hits in the bottom of the seventh, Babson stranded the potential go-ahead run at third in the top of the eighth. That set up the game-winning hit by La Crosse senior Liz Bradley in the bottom of the inning, as she doubled in her third run of the game to end the contest.

Cohen went 1-for-3 with two runs scored and one RBI to pace the Beavers' offense, while Barr went the distance on the mound, giving up four earned runs and striking out three in 7 1/3 innings.
