Box Score (vs. Cal Lutheran) | Box Score (vs. Morningside)
TUCSON, Ariz. - Just one day after staging an eght-run rally in its final at-bat, the Babson sofbtall team found itself on the losing end of a late-inning comeback as the Beavers took a 4-2 lead into the seventh only to fall to Cal Lutheran, 8-6, on Wednesday afternoon. Babson then dropped its second contest of the day to NAIA power Morningside, 12-0, in five innings. The Beavers grabbed a 1-0 lead against Cal Lutheran, as junior Courtney Thurston led off the game with a single, stole both second and third, and scored on a base hit by sophomore Brittney Russo. Babson the tacked on two unearned runs in the second, thanks a hit, an error, and two passed balls, to lead 3-0. After getting one run back in the top of the third, Cal Lutheran pulled to within one with a leadoff homer in the fifth. However, the Beavers went back up by two when first-year Nicole Giuliano led off the bottom of the fifth with a single, stole second, went to third on a sacrifice bunt by Thurston, and scored on a sac fly to left by Russo. That gave Babson a 4-2 lead that it would hold until the last inning. After six solid innings, sophomore starter Danielle Liska ran into trouble in the seventh. The hard-throwing righty got the first batter to ground out but then surrendered five consecutive hits that resulted in three runs. First-year Caroline Barr would come on in relief, but a passed ball, a single, and a sacrifice fly allowed three more runs to cross the plate as Cal Lutheran turned a 4-2 deficit into an 8-4 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.
Down but not out, Babson fought back in its half of the seventh, as junior Kim D'Agostino led off with a walk and classmate Jess Byrn followed with a single. Two batters later, Thurston added a one-out single to load the bases, and, following a pop-up for the inning's second out, junior Kaitlyn Clark laced a double to plate two and put the tying run in scoring position. However, the Regals induced a comeback to end the game, as Cal Lutheran held on for the 8-6 win. Babson managed just three hits in its second game of the day, as Morningside rolled to a 12-0 victory. Thurston, sophomore Michelle Bolduc, and D'Agostino each recorded singles for the Beavers, who are now 4-5 with five games remaining on their spring break trip. |
