TUCSON, Ariz. - The Babson College softball team opened its 2008 season in Tuscon, Arizona on Saturday, where the Beavers split a pair of non-conference games. Babson defeated Delaware Valley, 6-3, before falling to national powerhouse North Central, 11-2.

In the opener against Delaware Valley, the Beavers received a brilliant pitching performance from senior Jess Byrn, who took a no-hitter into the sixth before surrendering a single with two outs. The veteran righthander would eventually surrender three runs, none of which were earned, while walking two and striking out five in the seven inning complete game victory.

Byrn, senior captain Jess Cohen, and junior Kim D'Agostino each recorded two hits and a run scored to lead the offense in the game one win. First-years Nicole Giuliano and Jess Winer also hit well in their collegiate debuts, as Giuliano went 1-for-2 with two runs scored and one driven in and Winter finished 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Shoddy defense cost the Beavers in their second game of the day, as Babson committed five errors that led to six unearned runs in an 11-2 loss to North Central. Sophomore Danielle Liska started and gave up three earned runs and fanned four in four innings before giving way to rookie Caroline Barr, who allowed two earned runs and struck out two in the final three innings.

Offensively, Babson was led by junior Courtney Thurston, who went 2-for-2 with a run scored, and D'Agostino, who drove in a run with a second-inning single. Winer added another hit and scored a run, while junior Michelle Bolduc rounded out the Beaver offense with a hit.
