BABSON PARK, Mass. - After winning their second consecutive NEWMAC Championship, the 10th-ranked Babson College women's lacrosse team is headed to Connecticut to face Trinity College in the first round of the 2008 NCAA Division III Tournament. The contest will take place on Wednesday, May 7, at 5 p.m. Tickets will be $3 for adults, $2 for students with ID, and $1 for children 12 and under. Babson will enter its second straight NCAA tournament with a spectacular record of 15-2 - matching last year's team for the highest win total in program history. Among the Beavers' 15 victories was a thrilling 13-12 double overtime win over Trinity in Florida back on March 19. Babson's incredibly balanced attack will be led by senior All-American Anita Martignetti, who recorded 45 goals and 20 assists for a team-high 65 points to go along with 37 groundballs, 42 draw controls, and 25 caused turnovers. Sophomore Anna Collins tied Martignetti for the team lead with 65 points, totaling 52 goals and 13 assists as well as 32 GBs, 42 draws, and 20 CTs, while sophomore Kaitlyn Pettengill chipped in with 51 goals and 10 assists for 61 points. Junior All-American Jackie Godfrey added 35 goals, 23 assists, 47 groundballs, 42 draws, and 29 CTs, and junior Lindsay Bucci was the Beavers' fifth player with 50-plus points with 38 goals and 15 assists. Defensively, Babson will have rookie sensation Sarah Macary in net. The first-year keeper led the NEWMAC with a 7.57 goals against average and a .576 save percentage, including stops on over 70 percent of the free position attempts against her. Macary will have a veteran backfield in front of her, anchored by senior tri-captains Bethany Nardone, who totaled 25 groundballs and 27 CTs, and Brianne Carlson, who added 30 groundballs and 14 CTs. Junior Kate Nichols will also bring valuable experience to the Beavers' defense, as she contributed 29 groundballs and 14 CTs this spring.
Currently ranked 11th in the country by the IWLCA, Trinity enters the NCAA Tourney with a record of 11-6. The Bantams, who lost to Colby in the NESCAC Championship Game, will be led by CJ Yanofsky, who amassed 54 goals and 21 assists for 75 points this year, and Rachel Romanowsky, who added 41 goals and 22 assists for 63 points. |
