Program History
Dating back nearly four decades, men's ice hockey boasts one of the most storied histories of any sport at Babson. After enjoying moderate success in their first 15 years, the Beavers emerged as one of the most dominant teams in the nation during the 1980s. Between 1981 and 1992, Babson went a combined 232-81-18 for an incredible .728 winning percentage. During that 11-year stretch, the team recorded nine seasons with 20 or more victories, and in 1983-1984 went 27-5-1 on its way to the program's first-ever NCAA Division III Championship.
In recent years, Babson has continued to maintain its place as one of the most formidable teams in the country. The Beavers posted back-to-back 17-win seasons in 2002-03 and 2003-04 before enjoying a magnificent 20-5-3 campaign in 2004-05. After posting 17 more wins in 2005-06, Babson had another fantastic season this past winter, finishing 18-10-1, winning its first ECAC East Tournament Championship since 1992, and earning its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 1993. The Beavers, who eventually fell to Manhattanville in the National Quarterfinals, also earned a top-15 national ranking for the fifth straight season, finshing the year ranked 12th in the country.
Along with great team success, Babson hockey has also produced a number of magnificent individual players. The Beavers have had a total of 14 players earn All-American honors, including Babson Athletics Hall of Fame members Fran Murray, Tom Sasso, and Paul Donato, In addition, Sasso received college hockey's most prestigious honor - the coveted Hobey Baker Award - in 1986 and 1987, while Donato was a finalist for the award in 1984.
