BABSON PARK, Mass. - Babson College played host to its second annual Golf Spring Opener at the Atlantic Country Club on Sunday and Monday. The Beavers placed third out of 11 teams in the two-day event, which was won by Salem State College. The Beavers' team score of 646 was 15 strokes shy of Salem State's 631, 13 behind second-place New York University, and six strokes ahead of fourth-place Nichole College. Sophomore Fernando Pineres (Cartagena, Colombia) turned in another outstanding performance for Babson, firing rounds of 76 and 78 to finish in a tie for third with a combined score of 154. He was only four strokes off the winning pace of 150 set by medalist Pat Pio of Nichols, and only three behind runner-up Doug Croteau of Salem State. Also playing well for the Beavers despite difficult playing conditions were first-year Bryan Eger (Hopkinton, Mass.), who placed 17th overall with a two-round total of 165, senior co-captain Travis Dewire (Wellesley, Mass.), who tied for 20th with a 167, first-year Matt Doherty (Tuckahoe, N.Y.), who was close behind in 23rd with a 168, and senior co-captain Rory Doherty (Chelmsford, Mass.), who finished 35th with a 172. A total of 56 golfers from 11 teams competed in the event.
