GORHAM, Maine - Junior Ryan Pike (Saco, Maine/Thornton Academy) had two doubles and a home run and drove in six runs as the University of Southern Maine posted an 18-9 victory over Babson College in a non-conference baseball game Thursday afternoon at the USM Baseball Stadium.

The win was the fourth straight, and eighth in the last nine games, for the Huskies who improved to 27-10 overall. The Beavers dropped their third straight to slip to 26-12 overall.

Pike hit a three-run homer and a two-run double during the Huskies' 11-run second inning uprising. He walked with the bases loaded in the third and had double in the sixth.

Freshman Jordan Berthiaume (Berlin, Conn.) had four hits and three RBI to pace the Huskies' 18-hit attack. Junior Ryan Gaffney (Salem, N.H./Central Catholic) had three hits and scored four times. Junior Anthony D'Alfonso (Westbrook, Maine) had a triple and home run, and scored three runs.

Junior Jeff Wojnar (Bellaire, Texas/Episcopal) led the Beavers' 16-hit offense with four hits, including a double and his second home run of the season. Senior Matt Delaney (Newton, Mass./Newton South) had three hits, including a double, and four RBI. Senior Steve Tahmoush (Arlington, Mass.) had three singles, walked twice and scored three times.

Sophomore Andrew deBethune (St. Albans, Maine/MCI), the second of five USM hurlers used in the game, picked up his fourth win of the season working 2.1 innings of scoreless innings. Senior starter Jon Igoe (Lexington, Mass.) was tagged with his first loss of the campaign against three wins.

In the second inning, the Huskies sent 15 men to the plate on the way to scoring a season-best 11 runs in one inning. The Huskies had eight hits and received two walks, and benefited from two wild pitches and two costly errors. Seven of the 11 runs were unearned.

 

 

Southern Maine returns to action Saturday (12:00 p.m.) when it hosts Western Connecticut State University in a Little East Conference doubleheader. The games are the final regular season contests for USM.

Babson closes the regular season with a non-conference doubleheader at home on Sunday (1:00 p.m.) against Tufts University.
