FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Babson College baseball team opened its season with a double-header split against Salve Regina University in Fort Myers on Friday, as the Beavers lost game one, 10-6, before winning the nightcap, 11-2. The victory in game two made Babson baseball history, as it marked the 500th win since the program achieved varsity status back in 1969. The Seahawk offense provided plenty of support, scoring two runs in the second inning, four in the third inning and four more in the fifth inning. Senior Matt Leonard [Ridgefield, Conn.] led the way with two hits, three runs scored and one run batted in. Fellow senior Robert Peruzzotti [Mystic, Conn.] added a double, two runs and one RBI, while senior Steve Tressler [Phoenix, Ariz.] had two hits, one run and one RBI. Trailing 10-1, Babson (1-1) scored five runs in the final two innings to get within four, but the comeback would fall short. In the sixth, sophomore Jake Bartlett [Weymouth, Mass.] singled in classmate Sean Pucciarelli [Robbinsville, N.J.] and later scored on an RBI-groundout by senior Robbie Leer [Edina, Minn.]. Senior Steve Tahmoush [Arlington, Mass.] later singled in sophomore Dave Ahern [Bedford, Mass.] for the Beavers' third run of the inning, and Leer doubled in both Pucciarelli and Bartlett in the seventh for the 10-6 final.
Junior Jeff Wojnar [Bellaire, Texas] started and took the loss for Babson, surrendering four earned runs in two innings of work. He was relieved by sophomore Michael O'Brien [Shrewsbury, Mass], who pitched five solid innings out of the bullpen, giving up two earned runs and striking out four. GAME 2 Freshman Charles Matarazzo [Montville, N.J.] singled and scored for Salve Regina in the nightcap, while classmate Michael Infantino [South Cairo, N.Y.] doubled and drove in a run. For the day, Tahmoush led Babson at the plate, going a combined 5-for-7 with two runs and four RBIs. Ahern added two hits, five runs, and two stolen bases, and Bartlett contributed three hits and two runs. Leer and fellow seniors Andrew Nodine [Portland, Maine] and Matt Delaney [Newton, Mass.] each finished with a double and three knocked in for the Beavers, who return to action on Saturday with games against Amherst and Eastern Nazarene.
