Program History
After years as a club sport, the Babson track and field teams achieved varsity status in spring 2001. In their first season, both the men and women enjoyed great success, as a total of three athletes qualified for the NCAA New England Division III Championships. The Beavers also had their first-ever NEWMAC All-Conference honoree, as Brian Gagne '02 took first place in the 10,000 meter run at the conference championships.
Following a promising inaugural campaign, the men's and women's track squads continued their rise to prominence in 2002. The men's team had three individuals and two relay teams qualify for the NCAA New England meet, while the women sent two individuals and two relay squads to the regional championships. In addition, jumper Katie Collins '02 and distance runners Gagne and Chris Perry '04 were named All-New England for their performances at the meet. Gagne also repeated as conference champion in the 10,000 meter run, becoming Babson's first-ever two-time All-NEWMAC selection.
In 2004, Perry became the program's first two-time All-New England honoree after he finished sixth in the 10,000 meter run at the NCAA New England Division III Championships. He was one of four Beavers to qualify for the event. Babson then sent four individuals and three relay teams to the regionals in 2005, including sprinter Sara McSweeney '06, who became the program's second female to earn All-New England honors when she finished eighth in the 100-meter dash. Then in 2006, Sweeney again earned All-New England status, making her the first Babson female to receive regional honors in multiple seasons, while Dan Cowan '08 led the men with a spectacular campaign in the 110 meter hurdles, becoming the second male to earn All-Conference, All-New England, and All-ECAC honors.
This past spring saw the track and field program continue to reach new heights, as Babson set new program records with eight NCAA regional qualifiers in 10 different events and four more ECAC qualifiers. Cowan placed seventh at regionals to join Perry as the only two men in program history to earn All-New England honors in multiple seasons, while Nadine Lussier '08 finished second in the javelin at the NEWMAC Championships to become the first female in team history to earn All-Conference status. In addition, six men and one woman earned Individual Academic All-American honors, while the men also garnered Team Academic All-American status.
